Artists carefully paint the final touches on beautiful ornamental glass globes as the workday comes to an end. The Prodglob Clasic workshop sparkles and glimmers with thousands of ornaments - up to 80,000 per month are produced in peak periods.

The company produces Christmas tree ornaments, mostly for export to Western Europe and the United States. For a very small business, Prodglob has been extremely successful, counting among its clients large retailers in the United States.

Through a loan program funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, ShoreBank Advisory Services assisted a local bank, Banca Transilvania, in providing financing to expand Prodglob Clasic's production facility, allowing the company to increase capacity and better organize its production process. The investment's return has been so great that the company was recently able to repay the entire loan well ahead of schedule.

Prodglob Clasic is a rare example of a Romanian small business exporting a unique, value-added product. Rather than relying on low labor costs, Prodglob hires and trains local residents - mostly women - to create a product whose value is not just price, but the quality and individuality of each piece. Such sustainable demand, along with the increased production capacity, should enable Prodglob to continue to grow, bringing increased employment and wealth accumulation to local families for years to come.

ShoreBank Advisory Services helps local banks in emerging economies expand their capacity to support small businesses, applying Shorebank's knowledge of development finance to help financial institutions in other countries change their world.
