It's naptime for kids across Chicago, including those in 48 home day cares that make good childcare affordable for low-income parents. ShoreBank Neighborhood Institute, a nonprofit that provides loans, matched savings accounts, job placement services and financial training in Chicago, has partnered with Local Initiative Support Corporation, a national nonprofit, to support the day cares. It's a win-win partnership, with families gaining access to affordable childcare, and day care owners building their businesses.

Each day care owner receives a ShoreBank Individual Development Account (a matched savings account), as well as accounting services, financial management training and credit counseling. Owners save $55 per month toward their business, which is matched by Bank One until the account reaches $4,000.

In addition to providing safe, loving care for about 275 kids, this project has an environmental impact, too. Most owners have installed energy-saving features like compact fluorescent light bulbs, and many of the homes have been renovated to be more energy-efficient. In addition, the kids learn about recycling and ecology - thus making an impact today and teaching tomorrow's recyclers.

Access to childcare is critical to helping parents maintain jobs, earn income and raise healthy kids. ShoreBank participates in day care projects in its priority areas, helping providers build and expand centers through loans, financial information and consulting assistance.
