In this small town, 40 people are already at work at Paneltech International, doing their part to create high quality wood products in environmentally safe ways.

Medium density overlay plywood has a special paper coating to increase its strength and durability; traditionally, the paper is made through a process that results in a cyanide residue. Paneltech International figured out how to remove cyanide from the production process, thus eliminating the toxic by-product.

Paneltech also provides rail cars to transport logs, and in 2002 was able to use this business to expand its positive environmental impact, thanks in part to ShoreBank.

During the summer of 2002, forest fires devastated pine forests outside Tucson, Arizona. Many of the damaged trees were salvageable, but had to be harvested within six months, before they lost their value. But salvaging the wood meant assembling 100 trains, each with 100 cars, to transport the trees from Tucson to Northern California, where they would be processed.

Paneltech turned again to ShoreBank for financing - and three ShoreBank affiliates quickly pooled their resources to fund Paneltech's acquisition of the necessary rail cars. As a result, Paneltech was instrumental in salvaging millions of board feet that otherwise would have rotted on the mountain slopes.

Preserving the environment, stabilizing communities by providing employment and generating economic returns is the triple bottom line impact that ShoreBank seeks. Companies like Paneltech are proving that good business, environmental health and community prosperity can go hand-in-hand.
